Rug Cleaning in Reading

A good share of the rugs we are asked about in Reading turn out to be viscose, which the trade sells as art silk or bamboo silk, and it is the one fibre that genuinely does not like water. Viscose is a plant-based filament that loses most of its strength when wet, so the pile flattens, yellows in patches and goes stiff where a drink went in. A wool rug in the same room would have shrugged it off.

Telling the two apart is straightforward once you know what to look for. Wool feels dry and slightly springy, crushes and then recovers, and a snipped fibre singes to a brittle ash with a smell of burnt hair. Viscose is cold to the touch, very shiny, lies flat in bands and feels almost like damp paper once it is wet. We check before choosing a method, not after.

In practice that means a viscose rug gets a low-moisture clean with the pile set carefully as it dries, and nobody promises the original sheen back. Wool and good synthetics take a proper extraction instead. It is the same visit either way — the difference is how much water goes in and how long we spend brushing the pile straight afterwards.

Reading questions

The things people in Reading ask us most often.

How do I know if my rug is viscose or wool?

Feel it first. Wool is dry and springy, viscose is cold, very shiny and lies in flat bands. Wool recovers after you crush it in your hand and viscose keeps the mark. We confirm it on the day before deciding how much water the rug can take.

My art silk rug has gone stiff and yellow in one patch. Can that be fixed?

Sometimes improved, rarely made perfect. Yellowing in viscose is damage to the fibre itself rather than soil sitting on top of it. We can clean the rug, reset the pile and tell you honestly how much of the mark is likely to stay.

Do you cover Caversham and Tilehurst for rug cleaning?

Yes, along with Newtown, Southcote, Whitley, Coley, Katesgrove and Earley, across RG1, RG2 and RG30. There is no travel charge, and a rug can be done on the same visit as a carpet or a sofa.

Can you clean a rug in a flat with no outside space?

Yes. We work on it indoors over protective sheeting and leave it flat to dry, which takes longer in a flat than in a house. Tell us which floor you are on and how the stairwell works, so that we arrive with enough hose.
