Cleaning carpets in Bishop's Stortford
Bishop's Stortford runs up both sides of the Stort valley, with Victorian and Edwardian streets near the centre and a great deal of later family housing on the slopes above. A fair amount of the work we do in the town is upholstery rather than carpet, and the two jobs are less alike than people assume.
A carpet has a backing and a floor under it, so it can take water. A sofa has foam, webbing and a frame, and anything that soaks into the foam has nowhere to go. Upholstery is cleaned with far less moisture, more passes and a lot of attention to what the fabric is. We check the label and test a hidden seam before anything else happens.
Prices go by the piece rather than by the room. A dining chair seat is £10 and a seat with the back £15, a footstool £25, an armchair £35, a cuddle chair £45, then £50 for a two seater, £80 for a three, £105 for a four, £130 for a five and £150 for a six. Most people have us do the suite and the carpet in one visit.

Bishop's Stortford questions
The things people in Bishop's Stortford ask us most often.
How wet does a sofa get and how long before we can sit on it?
Much less wet than a carpet - damp to the touch rather than soaked. Four to six hours is usual with a window open, longer for heavy fabric in winter. We never put enough water in to reach the foam, because foam that gets wet stays wet.
What does it cost to do a three seater and two armchairs?
£150 all in - £80 for the three seater and £35 for each armchair. Add a footstool at £25 if there is one. The £50 minimum charge is comfortably met, and there is no travel charge on top.
The sofa fabric has no cleaning label - can you still do it?
Usually. Without a label we test a hidden area for colour fastness and shrinkage and work from what the fibre tells us. If it reacts badly we stop and tell you rather than carry on. Old loose covers and very pale linen are the ones that need most care.
Do you travel out to Sawbridgeworth and the Hallingburys?
Yes - Sawbridgeworth, Thorley, Spellbrook, Hockerill, Birchanger, Little and Great Hallingbury, Stansted Mountfitchet, Much Hadham and Albury. CM23 and the lanes around it, with no charge for getting there and no call-out fee.
