Walking past it for a day feels wrong and is genuinely the better approach. By the next morning most of it lifts with a vacuum and what remains is a much smaller job.

Why does the pale mark only show on the dark carpet?
Because chalk dries to a light powder. On a light carpet it disappears into the colour; on a dark pile it looks like a bloom across the surface. It is not damage, and it comes out readily once it is fully dry.
Do you come out as far as Hambleden and Skirmett?
