Croxley Green grew when the Metropolitan line arrived, and a great deal of it is 1930s semi-detached housing from that stretch - bay window, front room, back room and a straight flight of stairs between them. There is older property around the green and newer building at the edges, but the inter-war semi is the house we spend most of our time working in here.
Underneath it all there is chalk with clay lying over the top, and clay is the more difficult of the two on a carpet. It is sticky rather than powdery, it holds iron which gives it that yellow-brown cast, and it genuinely stains instead of just sitting loose in the pile. It also has to dry before anything else happens to it, because wet clay smears over three times the area.
Inter-war houses have a wear pattern all of their own. The front room takes sun through a big bay and the carpet near the window fades over the years, which is fade rather than dirt and will not come back. The hall is narrow, so every bit of traffic uses the same strip. And the stairs are steep and straight, which at least makes them quick to do properly.
