Cleaning carpets in Godalming
Godalming has a lot of genuinely old housing in it, timber-framed and Bargate stone through the centre, Victorian terraces above, and later estates on the hills around. Old houses here tend to have wool carpet and newer ones synthetic, and the difference matters more than almost anything else we need to know before starting work.
Wool is absorbent, slightly acidic by nature and it felts if it is agitated wet. It wants an acid-side solution, controlled moisture and a short dwell. Synthetic fibres barely absorb water at all, so they take higher heat, a more alkaline pre-spray and more aggressive agitation without complaint. Treat wool like nylon and you get shrinkage; treat nylon like wool and you get a carpet that is still dirty.
Telling them apart is not always obvious from looking. A single fibre pulled from an edge and burned gives it away - wool smoulders and smells of hair, synthetic melts into a hard bead - though we would normally go by feel, construction and the age of the house. If there is any doubt we test an out of the way corner first.

How do I know whether my carpet is wool or man-made?
Age of the house is a good guide, and so is feel - wool is softer and springs back more slowly. We check before cleaning because the two want different chemistry and different moisture. If we are unsure we test a hidden corner rather than guess.
Does a wool carpet cost more to clean than a synthetic one?
No - the price list is the same, a lounge from £40 and a bedroom from £30 whatever the fibre. Wool takes a little longer and a gentler approach, and that is our problem rather than something to charge for.
Can an old wool carpet shrink or pull away from the edges?
It can if it is soaked and left, which is how most of the horror stories start. Controlled moisture, a mildly acidic solution and heavy extraction avoid it. On a very old carpet with a jute backing we use less water again and say so first.
