Rug Cleaning in Bedford
Most of the rugs we are handed in Bedford are one of two things: wool, often in the older houses around De Parys and the Embankment, or polypropylene, which is what nearly every modern shop-bought rug is made from. The two behave almost oppositely. Wool absorbs water and holds soil deep in the fibre; polypropylene repels water and holds oily soil on the surface.
That changes what each one needs. Wool wants a mildly acidic cleaner, controlled moisture and quick drying, because alkaline products dull it and too much water makes it shrink and go harsh. Polypropylene takes a hot alkaline clean happily, and the risk with it runs the other way: residue left behind in a fibre that then attracts dirt back within weeks.
There is a quick test for it. Snip a hidden tuft and hold a flame to it — wool smoulders, smells of burnt hair and leaves a crushable ash, while polypropylene shrinks from the flame into a hard bead smelling of candle wax. We do that rather than guess, because the wrong method on a wool rug is not something a second attempt puts right.

Bedford questions
The things people in Bedford ask us most often.
Is my rug wool or man-made?
A snipped tuft held to a flame settles it. Wool smoulders and smells of burnt hair, leaving ash you can crush. A man-made pile shrinks away and leaves a hard little bead smelling of wax. We check in an unseen corner before choosing a method.
Why can a wool rug not just be scrubbed with hot water?
Wool is a protein fibre. Heat and alkaline detergent make it dull, harsh and prone to shrinking, and too much water in the foundation pulls the shape out. It wants a mild acidic clean, controlled moisture and drying flat with air moving underneath.
My cheap rug went dirty again a few weeks after cleaning. Why?
Detergent residue, almost certainly. Synthetic pile holds any cleaner left in it, and that residue is sticky, so soil comes back quickly. A thorough rinse is most of the job on a polypropylene rug, which is why we extract rather than shampoo.
Do you cover Putnoe, Goldington and Brickhill?
Yes, with Queen's Park, Castle Quarter, Cauldwell, De Parys and Elstow, across MK40, MK41 and MK42. Rugs are from £25 each against a £50 minimum for the visit, and there is no travel charge inside Bedford.
