Rug Cleaning in Luton
Luton has a great many hand-made and hand-knotted rugs in it, and the first thing we test on one is the dye. Older vegetable dyes and some cheaper modern ones are not fully fixed, and warm water with the wrong chemistry will lift red out of a border and carry it across a cream field in a single pass. Once that has happened it is a specialist dye job and no longer a cleaning job.
The test takes a minute. A damp white cloth pressed onto each colour in turn, in a corner nobody looks at, shows whether anything comes away. If it does, the rug gets cool water, an acid rinse to hold the dye in place and a much faster drying regime, because bleed happens while a rug is sitting wet rather than while it is being worked on.
Drying flat and quickly matters just as much along the fringes and the selvedge, where water collects and then travels. We lift the rug clear of the floor so air can move underneath it, and where a rug is thick enough to hold water for a full day we say so before starting rather than leaving you to discover it.

Luton questions
The things people in Luton ask us most often.
Will the colours in my rug run?
That is the first thing we check. A damp white cloth on each colour, in a corner out of the way, tells us whether the dye is fixed. If it moves we switch to cool water, an acid rinse and faster drying, and we explain the risk before anything starts.
Is a hand-knotted rug priced the same as a machine-made one?
No. Machine-made rugs start at £25 each. Hand-made, antique and silk rugs are quoted once we have seen them, because the fibre, the foundation and the dyes all change what is safe to do and how long the job takes.
Do you cover Bury Park, Stopsley and Leagrave?
Yes, all of LU1 to LU4, including Wigmore, Farley Hill, High Town, Round Green and Limbury. There is no travel charge in the town, and the £50 minimum covers the visit rather than a single rug.
Can a rug be cleaned while it stays in the room?
Usually. We would rather lift it onto a protected surface so air gets underneath, but a heavy rug can be done in place with absorbent protection beneath it. Furniture standing on it has to come off first so the pile dries evenly.
