Why does the carpet look worse after I have wiped chalk off it?
Because wiping wet chalk spreads it. It is very fine and mildly alkaline, so a damp cloth drives it into the pile and rings it outwards. Let it dry, vacuum it hard, then have it extracted.
The carpet feels rough underfoot - what causes that?
Flint fragments out of the chalk sitting down in the base of the pile. They are sharp, they cut fibre with every footstep, and extraction is the only thing that reliably gets them out.
Do you come out as far as Bledlow?
