Cleaning carpets in Witney
Witney made blankets for a very long time, and wool is still the fibre we meet most in the older parts of the town. That matters, because wool does not behave anything like polypropylene. It holds around four times as much moisture, it dislikes anything strongly alkaline, and it will felt or shrink if somebody puts too much water through it and takes too little back out.
So the method changes. Lower moisture, a wool-safe pre-spray on the acid side, slower passes and a great many more dry strokes at the end. Handled properly a good wool carpet comes up beautifully and lasts for decades. Handled with a hired machine and a bottle of household detergent it goes crisp underfoot, browns at the edges and resoils within weeks.
The newer housing towards Ducklington and Curbridge is mostly synthetic, which is the opposite problem - it shrugs off stains and clings to greasy soil, so it dulls all over rather than spotting. We check the fibre before anything wet goes near the floor in either case. It takes a minute and it decides everything that follows.

Witney questions
The things people in Witney ask us most often.
How do I tell whether my carpet is wool?
The simplest test is a few fibres from a hidden edge and a flame - wool smells of burnt hair and goes out on its own, synthetic melts into a hard bead. We check as a matter of course before starting, so you do not have to.
Is there any risk of a wool carpet shrinking?
It can if it is overwetted, and that is the usual cause of ripples and gaps appearing at the skirting. We keep the moisture low, use a wool-safe pre-spray and make plenty of dry passes. Done that way there is no shrinkage.
Why did my carpet go brown a few days after it was cleaned?
Browning - usually lignin or old spill residue wicking up through the pile as it dries, and it is more common on wool. Too much water and too slow a dry cause it. It can be corrected, but it is far better avoided.
Which areas around Witney do you cover?
OX28 and OX29 - Cogges, Ducklington, Curbridge, Hailey, Crawley, North and South Leigh, Minster Lovell and Eynsham. No travel charge to any of them, and the £50 minimum is the same in the villages as in town.
