Cleaning carpets in Tring
Tring sits in the Chiltern gap with chalk under almost everything, and chalk does not behave like ordinary garden soil once it is on a carpet. It dries to a fine pale powder, so it shows worst on dark carpet rather than light, and it spreads at the slightest provocation. The rule is to let it dry, vacuum it properly, then extract what is left rather than rubbing at it wet.
Rugs are a bigger part of the work here than in most towns, because so many of the older houses have wood or tile with rugs over the top. Every one gets checked before it is cleaned - the fibre, the backing and the dyes, tested in a corner nobody looks at. Most wool and synthetic rugs are fine cleaned in the house. Viscose and some cottons are not, and we say so.
People ask how often it should all be done, and the honest answer depends on the room. A hall, a lounge and a flight of stairs in a busy house want doing every nine to twelve months. A spare bedroom might go three years and lose nothing by it. Cleaning is mostly about taking grit out before it cuts the fibre, so the rooms that get walked on are the ones that matter.

Tring questions
The things people in Tring ask us most often.
Why does my dark carpet look dusty and pale?
Chalk, most likely. It dries to a light powder that sits in the pile and shows up far more on dark colours than on pale ones. Vacuum it once it is bone dry, then have it extracted - scrubbing it damp only spreads it.
Do you get out to the villages towards Wilstone and Marsworth?
Yes - Wilstone, Marsworth, Long Marston, Puttenham, Aldbury and Wigginton, plus the whole of HP23. There is no travel charge, so a village job costs exactly the same as one in the town.
Do rugs have to be taken away to be cleaned?
Most can be done in the house. We check the backing and test the dyes first. If a rug is viscose, very old or likely to run, we will tell you rather than risk it. Rugs start at £25 each.
Is there a minimum charge for a small job?
Yes, £50, and it covers carpets, rugs and upholstery alike. Most people make it up with a couple of rugs or a hall and stairs rather than paying the minimum for one small room on its own.
