Cleaning carpets in Amersham
Amersham is really two towns, and for flooring the distinction matters. Down in the Misbourne valley the old town is period property - low ceilings, narrow halls, floors that are not level and staircases built long before anyone thought about vacuum cleaners. Up on the hill, Amersham on the Hill grew around the station in the 1920s and 1930s and is mostly solid inter-war and post-war family housing.
The two ask for different things from us. Old town floors need care over moisture and over what is underneath them - boards with gaps, occasionally an old solid floor that holds damp - so we use less water and dry harder. The hill houses are more straightforward: square rooms, proper subfloors, and wear concentrated exactly where you would expect to find it.
What they share is the ground outside the door. Everything here sits on chalk with flint through it, and flint is sharp. It comes in on shoes, works down into the base of the pile and cuts fibre every time somebody walks over it, which is how a carpet ends up looking tired without a single mark on it.

Amersham questions
The things people in Amersham ask us most often.
Do you cover both the old town and Amersham on the Hill?
Yes, all of HP6 and HP7, and Chesham Bois, Little Chalfont, Coleshill, Winchmore Hill, Hyde Heath and Little Missenden with it. There is no travel charge in any part of that, and the pricing is identical whether you are down in the valley or up at the top.
Our house is old and the floorboards have gaps - is that a problem?
Not usually. It does mean keeping the moisture down and making extra dry passes so nothing soaks through to the boards. We would rather take longer over a room than leave a floor damp underneath it.
What is the grit I can feel in the carpet?
Almost certainly flint out of the chalk. It is hard, sharp and abrasive, and it works on the pile from below. Getting it out on a regular cycle genuinely adds years to the life of a carpet.
Can you clean carpet that is laid over a solid floor?
Yes, though solid floors dry more slowly than boards because the moisture has nowhere to go except upwards. We allow for that on the day and tell you what ventilation the room is going to want.
