Rug Cleaning in Darlington
A machine-made rug is built much like a fitted carpet: tufts stitched into a primary backing, held there by latex adhesive, with a secondary backing glued over the top of it. Latex has a working life. After ten or fifteen years, and a good deal sooner if the rug has lived somewhere damp, it goes powdery, the two layers part company and the tufts lose their grip.
The sign is a fine sandy dust that keeps appearing under the rug however often you vacuum, usually with a faint musty smell and edges that have begun to curl. Once that has started, cleaning will not reverse it, and a vigorous wet clean can pull a weak rug apart. We check by flexing a corner and seeing what falls out of it.
Big wool rugs are the other half of the work here and they tell the opposite story. A hand-woven wool rug in one of the large West End houses has no adhesive in it at all and will outlive several fitted carpets, but it holds a great deal of soil before it ever looks dirty, which is exactly why it repays cleaning on a cycle rather than on appearance.

Darlington questions
The things people in Darlington ask us most often.
Why is there sandy dust under my rug?
Latex backing breaking down. It holds the tufts into a machine-made rug and it perishes with age and damp, turning to powder. Vacuuming takes it away and more appears. Cleaning will not stop it, and we will say if the rug is too weak to clean.
How long should a machine-made rug last?
Ten to fifteen years is a fair working life for the adhesive inside one, and less in a damp room or a conservatory. The pile often looks serviceable long after the backing has gone, which is why a rug can fail suddenly when it is finally cleaned.
Does a large wool rug cost more to clean?
It is quoted on inspection rather than from the £25 list, because size, thickness and the foundation all change the time involved. Wool holds a lot of soil before it looks dirty, so a rug like that is usually worth doing every couple of years.
