Cleaning carpets in West Byfleet
West Byfleet is the railway half of the pair - it grew around the station and the housing is mostly inter-war and post-war, with wide roads, generous plots and a good many 1930s semis and detached houses. It is a different place from Byfleet a mile down the road, and people here are quite firm about the distinction.
Those 1930s houses nearly all have the same staircase: a straight flight with a quarter turn at the top and a landing running off it. Stairs take roughly three times the footfall of a bedroom and they are the hardest part of a house to clean properly, which is precisely why they are the part that everybody skips, including the previous cleaner.
We do them by hand with a small upholstery tool, tread by tread and riser by riser. The risers matter - that vertical face is where soil collects and gets kicked in, and a wand simply cannot reach it. A standard flight is £35 and takes about as long as a bedroom, which tells you how much of it is detail work.

West Byfleet questions
The things people in West Byfleet ask us most often.
Why are stairs so much slower than a room?
Because every tread and riser is done by hand with a small tool rather than in long passes. A standard flight takes about as long as a bedroom, and doing them properly is why they come up so much better than the rest of the house.
Can I just have the stairs and landing done?
Stairs at £35 and the landing at £20 is £55, which clears the £50 minimum. Most people add the hall for another £20 and have the whole route through the house done for £75.
Do you cover Pyrford, Sheerwater and New Haw?
Yes, along with Woodham, Byfleet, Maybury, Send, Ripley and Wisley, and across into Woking itself. KT14 and the roads around it are all normal working area for us, with nothing added for travel.
The stair carpet has gone dark on the edges of the treads - why?
That is where every foot lands and where soil gets kicked into the angle between tread and riser. It is the first part of a staircase to darken and it usually lifts well with hand work and a decent pre-spray.
