Each grain is hard and sharp-edged, so once it has worked down between the tufts it behaves like fine sandpaper under every footstep. Getting sand out is a mechanical job more than a chemical one. We pre-spray, agitate the pile so the grains are lifted free of the backing, and then extract with enough water flow to flush them out rather than simply wet them. It is the agitation stage that most hired machines miss, which is why they often leave the grit exactly where it was.
