Cleaning carpets in The Lee
The Lee is a small village high in the Chilterns above Great Missenden, with a green, a scatter of cottages and farm properties along the lanes. This is beech country, and beech country has its own kind of dirt. Leaf mould comes in on boots from October onwards and it is organic material rather than plain grit, which means it marks a carpet far more readily than ordinary soil does.
Leaf mould wants treating as a stain, not as dust. It carries tannin, it is usually damp when it arrives, and left for a fortnight it sets into a brown mark that looks permanent. It settles as a grey cast over a whole room rather than a mark in one spot, and shifting it properly takes a degreasing pre-spray and heat.

Do you really come out to a village this small?

Something brown came in from the woods and has set - is it too late?
Probably not. Leaf mould goes stubborn but it rarely goes permanent. Tell us where it came from when you ring, because tannin needs a different pre-treatment to ordinary mud and getting that right is most of the job.
Does the wood burner explain why the whole room looks grey?
Very likely. Smoke leaves a fine greasy film that dulls everything evenly instead of staining one patch. Vacuuming will not lift it. A degreasing pre-spray and proper heat will. It is a room-wide job rather than a spot job.
