Rug Cleaning in Watford

Fringes are the part of a rug that usually gets ruined at home rather than by wear. They are not decoration: on a hand-made rug they are the warp threads the whole rug is woven on, which is why a bald fringe is a structural matter and a frayed one gets worse every time it is pulled. On a machine-made rug they are normally sewn on, which is a different and much easier problem.

The commonest cause of damage we see is an upright vacuum with a beater bar run over the end of a rug. The brush grabs the threads, twists them and snaps them off a few millimetres at a time, and the rug slowly loses its border. Vacuum the fringe with the hose and the floor tool instead, pulling away from the rug rather than across it.

When we clean a fringed rug the fringe is washed separately by hand and combed straight while it dries, because drying is the point at which it sets. A matted, grey, twisted fringe on an otherwise sound rug is one of the few jobs where the difference is visible from the other side of the room.

Watford questions

The things people in Watford ask us most often.

Why is the fringe on my rug going bald at one end?

Almost always a vacuum with a rotating brush. The beater bar catches the threads and breaks them off. Use the hose and the floor tool on the fringe instead, working outwards from the rug, and the damage stops where it already is.

Can a damaged fringe be repaired?

Not by us. We clean, comb and straighten fringes, which usually improves the look a great deal, but rebuilding one is specialist weaving work. We will tell you if that is what the rug needs instead of cleaning it and hoping for the best.

Do you cover all five Watford postcodes for rugs?

Yes: WD17, WD18, WD19, WD24 and WD25, taking in Cassiobury, Nascot Wood, Holywell, North Watford, Garston, Leavesden, Oxhey and Croxley Green. No travel charge anywhere, and rugs start at £25 each.

How long does a wool rug take to dry?

Allow a day for a medium wool rug and longer for a thick hand-made one. We dry it flat with air moving underneath rather than draped over anything, which holds the shape and stops water collecting along the ends.
