Cleaning carpets in Oakley
Oakley sits on the chalk downland west of Basingstoke, a village that has taken a good deal of family housing over the years without losing the lanes around it. Deane, Steventon and North Waltham are close by, and the fields between them go white when they are ploughed, which is the first clue to what ends up on the carpet.
Chalk behaves unlike any other soil indoors. It dries to a fine pale powder, so it shows worst on dark carpet rather than on light, which catches people out completely. It is also mildly alkaline, which means the usual alkaline cleaners have very little grip on it, and it is fine enough to travel a long way down into the pile.
The sequence matters more than the product does. Let it dry, vacuum thoroughly to lift the loose powder, then extract what remains using a mildly acidic rinse so the chemistry is actually working against it. Scrubbing chalk while it is still damp spreads a pale halo outwards from wherever you started and drives the rest of it into the backing.

Oakley questions
The things people in Oakley ask us most often.
There is a pale bloom on my dark hall carpet - what is it?
Chalk dust, almost certainly, given the ground around here. It dries to a light powder and only shows properly on darker pile. Let it dry, vacuum it, then have it extracted rather than rubbed.
Do you come out to Deane, Steventon and North Waltham?
Yes, along with Overton, Dummer, Ashe, Worting, Kempshott, Wootton St Lawrence and Malshanger. All of RG23 and the lanes around it are inside our normal area, with no travel charge and no call-out fee.
Why does an ordinary cleaner not shift chalk?
Because chalk is alkaline and so are most carpet cleaners, so they have nothing to work against. It wants a mildly acidic rinse and thorough extraction rather than a stronger detergent.
Can you do a hall and landing without the stairs?
You can, though it is an odd way round - the stairs take the hardest wear of the three. A hall and landing together is £40, which is under the £50 minimum, so most people add the stairs at £35.
