Cleaning carpets in Hungerford
Hungerford sits where the Kennet and the canal run together, and the housing along the main street is largely Georgian and Victorian, with cottages behind and a good deal of older property in the villages around. Bare or polished boards with rugs over them are as common here as fitted carpet, so a lot of what we do in this town is rug work.
A rug has no underlay and no fixings, so water goes straight through it to whatever is underneath. On boards that matters. We work rugs on a sheet with controlled moisture and take more out than we put in, and we check the back before we start: a cotton foundation with a loose weave will move if it is overwetted, and dyes on older hand-made pieces can run.
Rugs start at £25, and because the minimum charge is £50 it is usually worth doing two or three at once, or pairing a rug with the stairs. If a piece is very old, very valuable or we are not happy with how the dyes test, we will say so and recommend you take it to a specialist rug plant instead of pressing on.

Hungerford questions
The things people in Hungerford ask us most often.
Can you clean rugs in the house rather than taking them away?
Nearly always, yes. We work on a protective sheet so nothing soaks through to the boards, and use less water than on fitted carpet. Very delicate or very valuable pieces are better off at a rug plant, and we will tell you if yours is one.
How can I tell if the colours in an old rug will run?
We test a small area on a hidden part with a damp white cloth before any cleaning starts. If colour lifts onto the cloth we change approach or stop. Hand-made pieces with natural dyes are the ones to be careful with - machine-made rugs rarely give trouble.
Is £25 per rug or for the lot?
Per rug, and from £25 depending on size, with a £50 minimum on the visit. Two average rugs would meet it. Hearth rugs and runners are at the lower end; a large room-sized piece costs more and we quote it when we see it.
Do you get as far out as Great Bedwyn and Inkpen?
Yes - Kintbury, Inkpen, Combe, Shalbourne, Great Bedwyn, Froxfield, Chilton Foliat, Avington and Hungerford Newtown are all covered. It is a wide RG17 and we do not add anything for the miles.
